Stay safe this Christmas

Avon fire and rescue2

How can you stay safe at home?

  • Don’t decorate your smoke alarm. Leave it uncovered, and check it works before you start cooking. AF&RS recommend testing your alarm once per week.
  • When you're cooking a Christmas feast, make sure to follow the recipe, ask an expert and follow the instructions on your cooking appliances
  • Give your dinner your full attention, even whilst you’re cooking it! Keep distractions to a minimum and ask for help if you need it.
  • When using your microwave remember to keep metal out.

Candle safety at Christmas

  • Choose Safe Candle Locations, place candles on stable surfaces, away from Christmas trees, garlands, or flammable decorations.
  • Keep Out of Reach, always place candles well out of reach of children and curious little hands.
  • Never Leave Candles Unattended, extinguish candles when leaving a room or before going to bed to prevent accidents.
  • Use Flameless Options, consider using LED candles for a safe, festive glow.
  • Watch for Decorations, ensure candles are kept far from hanging stockings, tinsel, or tablecloths that could catch fire.

Fireplace safety

  • Fire Guards Are Essential, always use a sturdy fire guard to protect children from flying sparks or hot embers.
  • Supervise Closely, never leave kids unsupervised around open fires or heating appliances.
  • No Clothes Near Fires, avoid drying clothing or leaving flammable items near the fire.
